Hertfordshire Swifts Swallowed up!
Hertfordshire Swifts U17s are a combination of the best players from
Fullerians, Old Albanians & Stevenage. The side includes East of England
as well as County players. On paper & in fact, on the day, they provided
Welwyn Warriors with their stiffest test to date!
Missing Lana Block & Mel Harcourt meant that Warriors fielded a depleted
pack but Emma Cramphorn, Hannah Marques and Hitchin's Claire Foster rose
to the occasion in wet and heavy conditions as Warriors stretched their
unbeaten run by winning 35-0.
The first Warriors try came as Welwyn won their scrum and Jess Lane
started a move that saw Megan Williams score and convert to put Warriors
7-0 up. Hannah Marques scored the second try with a mazy 22 yard run and
with Williams' converting Warriors were 14-0 up. Another successful
Welwyn scrum set Williams up for her second try, that she also
converted. Skipper Charlie White marshalled her troops to maximum
effect, never allowing Swifts to settle.
Swifts did get across the Warriors try line but Megan Williams
tenaciously held up the ball and kept the Warriors a clean sheet. The
next Swifts attack was stopped on the Welwyn 22. Marques fly hacked the
ball over half way, as she dived on the ball, Swifts gave away a
penalty. Marques' quick tap & go, released Jess Lane who found Claire
Foster in space, back to Marques who crossed for her second try to make
it 28-0. Another fine try for Williams finished off the match.
Warriors were severely tested but more than proved capable of digging in
to win. Warriors team: Michelle Brophy, Jess Lane, Charlie White, Emma
Cramphorn, Sarah Stedman, Carley Simpson, Jordan Pearcy, Hannah Marques,
Emily Matuszcyk, Claire Foster, Mel Waites.
