U14 & U17 Girls Sweep all before them!

Welwyn Warriors Girls rugby teams travelled to Rochford 100 on the Essex Coast last Sunday, to take part in their third annual girls tournament. As well as local clubs Hertford & Letchworth, teams from Diss, Westcliffe, Uttlesford, Sudbury, Basildon, N.E.Essex and the hosts, Rochford 100 took part.

The Warriors girl's stats are fantastic! Combined points scored 352, conceeded 10! Don't be fooled into thinking the stats mean poor opposition, they don't! What we saw on Sunday was 2 girls teams, well coached and well motivated on the top of their game. The team work from both age groups was outstanding. Team spirit second to none! Their passing was impeccable, the line out ball was imaginative, the back play fast and furious and up front, as always, Welwyn tackled like demons!

The U14s scored 199 points to 0 conceeded! Their biggest win was 73-0 v Uttlesford. A total shut out in their age group! The U17s managed 153-10! Their best win was 44-0 v Letchworth.When Warriors started out, Basildon was the benchmark club in the region. Both finals involved Warriors and Basildon and the progress the Welwyn Girls have made was clear for all to see! The U14s won their final 53-0 and the U17s had a tougher time, winning 14-5.

It would be unfair to pick out any individual performance as every girl played her heart out for Warriors but perhaps special mention should be made of Megan Williams who got off a night flight from Montreal, came straight to the tournament and played on through the jet lag! She slept soundly on the coach home!

Warriors tour Biarritz in 5 months time. The opposition will undoubtedly be strong but Welwyn know their girls will be a match for any team!  Warriors are always on the look out for new players to join them. If you would like to give rugby a try, contact Team Manager, June White.
