Saracens vs London Irish
Sunday 9th October
Kick Off 15:00
London Irish travel to Vicarage Road Stadium for Round 2 of the
Powergen Cup as both Group B sides go in search of a win in this new
cross-border competition.
Expect a fight to the death as both sides fight to stay in the
competition as a loss will leave them at the bottom of the pool.
The Exiles narrowly lost on Sunday in Round 1 to London Wasps at the
Madjeski Stadium with a last minute Alex King drop goal sealing their fate
but they will arrive at Saracens in good spirits after acquitting themselves
well.
Prop Cobus Visagie should be back in action against the Exiles in the
revamped competition which this season includes the four Welsh regions
battling it out for a place in the final at Twickenham.
Ben Johnston is another player who is set for a return while Thomas
Castaignede is also hoping to be back in time to face his countryman Olivier
Magne. Capped 83 times by France, Magne has taken the country by storm since
his move to London Irish and his battle with Saracens back rowers Taine
Randell, David Seymour and Alex Sanderson is sure to be one of the fiercest
on the pitch.
Match report
Powergen Cup
Cardiff Blues 37 Saracens 20
After the home side had run in three tries at Cardiff Arms Park in the
opening half, Saracens never recovered despite a brief second half rally
which brought them back to within a score of the home side. In the end their
hosts were too strong and made sure of victory with a fourth try
Team News
Players acquire extra game time…
Saracens made it three wins from four with a bonus point to boot as they
beat Wasps 12-25 in the Guinness A League on Monday night at Henley RFC
The Wasps A Team will have been surprised to see the likes of Hugh
Vyvyan, Taine Randell, Shane Byrne and Kevin Yates run out onto the Henley
pitch for the game and they were obviously up for the challenge, looking for
scalps, in a gutsy performance which pushed Saracens all the way.
As expected Saracens forwards dominated up front despite a lot of
pressure from the home pack and this gave veteran scrum half Bracken the
perfect platform from which to control the game. Adam Powell again put in a
strong performance at centre and the team as a whole performed well and
achieved the result that was needed.
“After the last couple of results we felt that some of the players
needed some extra game time,” explained Head Coach Mike Ford after the game,
“and through playing some of the guys for 40 minutes we were able to put
them in a live situation which we just can’t recreate in training.
“The first team players did everything asked of them in the game which
was very pleasing and we had no injuries to speak of. Those involved enjoyed
themselves tonight and will get some time to rest on Tuesday as we prepare
for the Irish game on Sunday.”
With Saracens now scoring in every game this season so far after the
opening narrow defeat at London Irish by a solitary point A Team coach Mike
Hynard believes that the success in his side is pushing players hard as they
fight for first team recognition.
“It’s proving to be a place to shine,” commented Hynard
, “and
players playing on a Monday night are out to prove a point and push the guys
above them really hard. This season we’re seeing good signs from the Academy
players that they are maturing well and this can only be good for the whole
club as we now have competition all around the squad.”

Saracens quartet invited to England Training camp...
Congratulations to Saracens Academy Players Tom Mercey, Adam Powell,
Andy Saull and Ben Thomas who have all been invited to attend the England
U19 Training Day on Sunday 9th October at Broad Street RFC.
The Saracens contingent is as strong as Wasps, Leicester and Leeds, all
who have also provided four players to the squad, with Andy Saull and Ben
Thomas deserving particular praise as they have been selected a year young
to attend the session.
Club Partnership Programme News
Coach the Coaches Session
This season’s first Coach the Coaches session was held this week on
Tuesday evening with almost 30 coaches from our Partner clubs attending.
Mike Hynard, Saracens Academy manager led the session, focussing on the
BASICS of the game and how important it is to get them right – from U8s Tag
rugby players up to Premiership players. The session also focussed on
attacking rugby and the need for these skills in order to break down modern,
well organised defences. A theory session inside was then followed by
observation of an academy coaching session where the players were put
through their paces developing ball handling and decision making skills.
