No fines this week was everyone was at the club on time. Good spirit in the changing room and the new polo shirts were distributed. Captain Dave tried on a medium sized one and struggled to get out of it again! The weather conditions were perfect for running rugby. Dave and Biffa had to step in as physios in Sarah’s absence and struggled to strap anyone up as the new box of tape had been nicked. Coachman Pete led the warm up and, following Dave’s traditional pre-match speech, the Welwyn boys stormed onto the pitch to do battle.
First blood went to Imperial Medicals as they scored their 3 and only points of the game. From thereon in, Welwyn took the game to the opposition and showed their superior skills and fitness. The first try was scored from a brilliant strike against the head by Banksie (his words, not mine), with the ball being picked up by Kitten and taken over the line to score by Captain Dave. I do not remember much about my try as a few minutes earlier Mark Harris had given me a “Glasgow kiss” and nearly knocked me out but I seem to remember running the entire length of the pitch, evading all 15 of the opposition to score in the corner!!! Lukey missed the conversion. The running machine that is Jules got on the score sheet again with a try this week, as did Biffa (from three inches), one more apiece for Me and Dave Orton, and one for James Turnbull. Lukey scored two penalites and one conversion and Little Dick Beard slotted over a cheeky little drop goal.
The ref very unfairly handed out three yellow cards, one to me for commenting on how hot one of the opposition had looked last night, one for Kitten for being Kitten and one for Owen Hopley for no particular reason.
There were fines after the game for Little Dick Beard for wearing his new polo shirt after the match instead of his new smart shirt and for me for wearing what some people seem to think are jeans. There should have been fines for Biffa, Yourgos, Louis, James Powell and Rob Picken for being conned into parading as fashion models for the new gear in the club shop!!
