There was yet more success for Welwyn Warriors at last week’s Welwyn-Hatfield sports awards, as the girls rugby team walked away with the ‘Club of the Year’ title. This was the third year running Warriors had made the final short list but this year they went all the way! A tribute not only to the current members but all those girls that have played and moved on to senior rugby and of course, to Founder Lesley Brookes. Without Lesley, none of this would have been possible!
It was a good night for the Warriors as Luke Williams and Dave Marques both made the final shortlist for ‘Coach of the year’, Fullback Megan Williams missed out as ‘Sports person of the year’ to international cyclist, Laura Trott and Marques was also short listed for the ‘Services to Sport’ award.
Afterwards team manager Dave Marques was far from downhearted at personally missing out, ‘This isn’t a little town bash, there are very accomplished sports clubs & sportsmen & women, some of international standard, all vying for the awards, it’s an award to be prized and make no mistake, we will treasure it!’. He also paid tribute to the assistance the Warriors have locally, ‘Welwyn rugby club are so supportive of the girls section that it makes our lives easy. On top of that I can’t thank Welwyn-Hatfield council enough! Jo Higson & Colin Smyth give us not only moral support but administrative help and we’ve been lucky enough to receive a grant from the council for new kit. I’d urge all sports clubs to speak to Colin, he’ll help in any way he can! On top of that The Welwyn-Hatfield Times give us great coverage, and not forgetting our kit sponsors Tylers. We will shortly be undertaking a school/club coaching programme to recruit new players and this couldn’t be a better advert for girls to come & join us’!
