Welwyn warriors coach Luke Williams had harsh words for his u17s yesterday, despite their beating Hertford by 53 points to nil! Williams felt the Warriors were ‘playing by numbers’ and post match a team de-brief was held. Not all was bad, Hooker, Hannah Marques won the man of the match award for her impressive running and, as ever, tenacious tackling. Even when taking the ball into contact. Marques managed to offload and keep Warriors in possession. Vice Captain Hannah Gallagher and full back Megan Williams tore through the Hertford defence to give the blues a hard time. Hertford however, never let their heads drop and kept plugging away until the final whistle. Too often though their attacks were snuffed out by great tackling from Casey Shults and Lana Block.
Meanwhile, Missing two experienced Herts County players it was an opportunity for the rest of the U14 team to step up to the plate. In the match against Hertford, a solid defensive display enabled Welwyn to win 15-0 thanks to two tries from Sam Voyle and one from Olivia Payne. The second game was much tougher against a Basildon side containing eight Essex County players and Welwyn did very well to dig out a 10-10 draw, with both tries from rapidly improving Abi Lee. Prop Amber Lee made a very good debut for Welwyn.
