Welwyn's first game of the season was an away fixture against Letchworth.
The dry, warm weather made for an open game which started off with Letchworth putting Welwyn under a lot of pressure. Following a 10 minute period when Welwyn had spent most of the time defending they pushed themselves up the field, quick ball from Chris Kemp gave Dan Watt the space for a fantastic side step through the Letchworth defence, a miss pass to this weeks man of the match, Richard Humphries, saw him in for the first score, which Watt duly converted.
The game now opened up more and Letchworth manufactured an excellent overlap which they failed to convert, 5-7. As the first half was nearing its end Welwyn were again putting pressure on Letchworth and another good back move gave winger Oli Trim the space to drive over for an unconverted try.
The second half saw the intensity of the game raise Letchworth were the first to benefit with a converted try. Mid way through the half Welwyn forced a defensive error by Letchworth and Dan Watt and Oli Di Lieto forced the ball over the line with Di Lieto getting the last touch for the try. Watt narrowly missing the conversion.
Letchworth continued to fight back winning a string of penalties in Welwyn's 22 which eventually saw them crash across for another unconverted try. With the score at 17 - 17 and five minutes to go Welwyn applied more pressure. A tap penalty from Watt enabled Welwyn to force a line out 5m out from the Letchworth line. Letchworth won the line out but failed to clear their lines and Welwyn won a scrum 5m out. From the scrum the ball broke loose and Di Lieto managed to score his second try of the morning to seal an exciting 22-17 victory.
