Welwyn Warriors travelled to Aylesbury yesterday to play a combined Milton Keynes/Aylesbury side on a very heavy pitch. Warriors were on top form at both age groups!
Missing three of their Herts County Players, Welwyn U14’s snatched a dramatic late victory against a combined Buckinghamshire U14 team playing for the Milton Keynes Club. Milton Keynes are a physically very large side and they made this count by going into a 12-0 lead midway through the first half. Welwyn defended magnificently and got back into the game just before the interval with an Abbi Lee debut Try to make it 12-5. In the second half the superior fitness of the Welwyn Girls began to tell and a second Abbi Lee Try made it 12-10, before Courtney Arberrry capped an excellent performance with a Try and Conversion for a 17-12 win. Sam Voyle and Emma Wilson both took the battle to the home side and gave Welwyn the momentum at just the right time.
Meanwhile, their older counterparts were romping to a 70-0 victory! From the very first kick Warriors looked in sublime form, totally fired up! Emily Matuszczyk tore into the home side at every opportunity. Hannah Gallagher constantly tormented the home side with her thoughtful kicking. The back line of Megan Williams and Charisse Fallon simply blew away any hope MK had of winning the match. Casey Shults, Rebecca Seed and Hannah Marques stopped every attack in its tracks and Marques scored an amusing try, being the only player knowing where the ball was ran 15 yds for a solo try while all the other players followed shadows to the other side of the pitch! Mel Harcourt was another player that made the score sheet for the forward pack. Geri Thomas was at every breakdown. Skipper Lana Block kept Warriors focused on not letting her players slack, not even for a moment. Given the conditions, no one complained about the referee’s decision to finish the game early. With the National cup semi final coming up, what a great time to hit such form!
