Wimborne 12 - Welwyn-Saints 10
Welwyn-Saints made the long trip down to Wimborne yesterday and saw their title dreams crumble for the second year in a row! Despite dominating the first half and being camped in the Ellingham & Wimborne 22, Saints finished the half with only a 5-0 lead, Frankie Dawson scoring from a smooth line out move. In a bruising encounter both sides gave their all but it was the home defence that finished on top. Two tries in the second half saw the hosts leading 12-5 with minutes to go. From a Welwyn scrum Georgia Peedle managed to score in the corner but Geri Thomas was unsuccessful with the kick and Wimborne clung on to win.
Wimborne would now need to lose to Esher for Saints to have any chance of the Premier league title. Should that happen Saints would have to win their final match at Esher at the end of May. 'We're all disappointed, kicking ourselves really! We just couldn't make all that territory and possession in the first half pay' said Manager Dave Marques. 'Everyone played their heart out but when we lost skipper Hannah Gallagher mid way through the second half with a hamstring pull and then losing Georgia for 15 minutes as well, we lost a bit of our momentum. We'd also run out of subs whereas Wimborne still had spare players'
The girls are now already switching their sights to the National cup which starts next month. As losing finalists last year they're keen to go back to Lichfield and to lift the trophy as winners!
