The home side went into this with some concerns knowing what a scare they were given by Worthing last season. Worthing were one of the fancied sides for the title so Saints knew they had a tough encounter coming up. They need not have worried, Coach Dawson had prepared them well.
5 minutes into the match, a great breakaway try by skipper Hannah Gallagher settled the home sides nerves. Although Worthing kept up the pressure a second try from Alex Robertson after a great interchange between Hannah Marques, Megan William & Geri Thomas gave Welwyn some breathing space and just before half time, a clever line out move saw Frankie Dawson set up Williams for a try. Half time gave both a much needed breather, the match was played 'Full on' no quarter given by either side and some huge tackles were being made but despite this the game was played in a fantastic spirit.
Playing at the drier end of the pitch in the second half, Saints piled on the pressure and a poor defensive clearance kick saw Vicky Moxom score her first try for the side. 2 more tries apiece from Gallagher & Williams took the score to 40-0. Worthing never gave up though and became the first side this season to score against Saints with a try right at the death. Saints remain top of the league with Wimborne and Esher right behind them.
Coach Bob Dawson was delighted with a fine all round performance. 'It looks like it will be between Wimborne, Esher & ourselves for the title. We have to go to Wimborne in March and they are a very strong side so we'd better be prepared! Esher we know little about but they are unbeaten so can't be ignored! Both are away trips but the girls are playing as well as I've ever seen so we're confident'
