The Longest Day

Welwyn 3rd 60 March Bears 5

This was a trip to a part of the world that could convince you that the world was indeed flat; in fact the ground is close to a prison where they can watch prisoners running away for 3 days before deciding to start the cars and loose the dogs.

This was the start to the league campaign and the beginning match of the fight to retain the title. A very scrappy affair for the first 10 minutes saw Welwyn trying to establish some pattern to their play which was frustrated by some spirited March play. A few changes to the team from the last few weeks were the main factor behind the indecision at the start and once control had been established the points flowed, 24 points in the first half and 36 in the second.

Having subs proved crucial after Wiggy made a cameo appearance before departing with concussion. He was shown the customary sympathy from his team when on asking where he was and how he got there 3 times he was given 3 completely different answers! Yourgz managed to show in 40 mins why he is a sort after player in scoring 3 tries from all over the pitch. Gareth Evans continued the good form he is in, Creaky buzzed about as usual, whilst Bill and Neil controlled the line out. Dan Evans decided that his opposite number could not see the pitch well enough and decided to give him a panoramic view from the scrum on several occasions. Pat Lynch was solid at the back despite allowing the ball to bounce far too often, Dan Ginty had enough pace to make up for the slow fat hooker that came on in the second half. Jamie humph was tidy in everything he did as was Alan Crawley even if he was impersonating a crab with his sideways running.

Harry survived his first game of the season and must have had a knock on the head as well as he paid his £70-00 subs straight after the game. Why aye Dannie proved to be bi-lingual/ambidextrous playing at both centre and back row and Andy Eiduks did enough to suggest that he can play at this level with a little more coaching. Zombie realised after the game that the new laws made it easier to pick up and go from the base of the scrum. Shame he didn’t realise on the pitch.
