Welwyn provided an outstanding display of their skills; both in the forwards and in the backs.
The absence of Blake meant that the back line had to be restructured slightly, but the guys took to their positions well.
Strong defence was shown on a number of occaisions, and the attacking was structured, powerful and extremely effective.
The full match report and details of scorers will follow once Sergio has finished it, and the official photographer will be providing copious photos in due course...
Next up is the Plate Final on May 9th.

What a difficult match - to start with a few "no shows" for various reasons left the team short of players. A couple of players having to come off during the match due to injury made matters even more tense - it was a difficult match.
However, the team generally played well with some outstanding defence and attacking moves. The scrum was rock solid all afternoon. The loss of Tom and Dan to injury during the match meant the rest of the team had to play even harder. To their credit the team scored a try while a man or two down - fantastic effort.

Welwyn Under 17s beat Finchley 34 to 0 on Sunday 14th March 2010. Playing at home with a blue sky and a gentle breeze, Welwyn took on the Finchley team. Welwyn made the most of the scraps that they got in the first half, and entered half time 12 points ahead. After a team talk from the head coach "Crutches Rayner" at half time, the team dominated in every area of the game in the second half and ended the game 34 to nil.
Highlights of the match included;
Tom at flanker - awesome
Adam's first touch was probably a try, but not allowed
Blake - 100% commitment in every area of his game
Breezy - topping up the sun tan
Dan's drop goal in front of the posts...
Jack's - magic finger!
The "lucky cigarette" still worked its magic.

2010/03/07 | Welwyn U17s | 32 | Cheshunt RFC | 0 |

Welwyn U17s took on Cheshunt for a place in the Plate Semi Final.
After a rusty start the tries started to flow, sadly the conversions were less frequent...
It was good to field a full strength side, and to have Matt back on the touch line - even with his crutches.
The lucky cigarette once again worked its magic for a coach (you know who you are), and Welwyn U17s were 32 to nil winners at full time.
Special mention must be made of the following outstanding participants;
Dave (the water bottle) Schroder - who despite his son not turning up, he did.
Dan - gave up with the kicking tee and still missed...
Jack - very very sharp and back to his ripping best.
The entire squad for the strength of its defence.

The Under 17s End of Era Celebration, shirt presentation and BBQ was held on the afternoon of Sunday 27th June.

Firstly a HUGE thank you to the Di-Lieto's. Both Sergio and Alison worked tirelessly to ensure everyone was entertained, fed and watered. Some were more watered than others!
Following the dismal display of English football, the squad were treated to a review of the 'History' and 'The Final' photos on the large flat screen TVs.
Food and drink was flowing throughout the day. And my oh my - weren't the puddings good!
The speeches section was quite emotional, both for the speech-maker and us all listening. Ron was nearly in tears, and so were we all. The 'end of era' speeches and the passing of the '(n)on tour shirts' brought closure on some 10 years of the squad. As the shirts were presented Ron recounted many tales of all the hard work, fun and merriment that occurred over the years. Strangely, and somewhat surprisingly, Ron never mentioned his career before the blue van, when he worked in an old department store.
Sergio recounted a few tales and also thanked Mark for all his efforts, time and commitment, without which, non of this would have been possible. Matt and Mark also made great speeches.
The shirt giving ceremony had an interesting twist, with Big Lee taking the prize for best wearing of the shirt! You know what I mean.
What a great afternoon, and what a great send off to what has been a superb squad and set of parents.
Let's hope the lads all continue with Welwyn RFC for the forthcoming years, so we, and they, can all continue to meet up.
Finally, if anyone is missing a CD set of photos (history and final) let me know and I'll burn you another.
Andrew
